Why Disability Doulas are necessary

Greetings friend!

I hope August is treating you well so far.

As for me, I’m making a significant life transition and moving across the country for work (Michigan 🚚 California).

While it is anxiety inducing, it is also an exciting time for me and my family. I’ll be taking a short holiday/mental break from TBN next week, so you won’t see me in your inbox. I’ll return with more good stuff on August 17.

For now, let’s get into this week’s basics and news.

WEEKLY UPDATE

CLIFF NOTES: IN CASE YOU MISSED IT…

BENTON’S BASICS: WHAT IS A DISABILITY DOULA?

Long story short…

What exactly is a disability doula?

  • The term disability doula was coined by Stacey Milbern

  • Disability doulaing is “a tradition of caregiving pioneered by queer femmes of color” as Piepzna-Samarasinha outlined in her book, Care Work.

  • Disability doulas may find themselves supporting both disability journeys and queer or trans journeys as well

  • Why? LGBTQ+ people are more likely to have a disability than straight people. Disability may intersect with trans folks seeking gender-affirming care or experiencing gender dysphoria.
