The Comeback 🏋️

Greetings from LA!

I appreciate your patience, friend. I’ve spent the last month unpacking, figuring out my new neighborhood, learning my new role at work, and (attempting to) master my commute to work. I finally carved out some time to visit the beach and bask in all its splendor.

All in all, it feels great to be back and connect with you.

Also, it’s October and that means it’s Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). One of the most basic ways you can support disabled employees/employees with disabilities, in the workplace, is to start with your job descriptions. Here are some tips (adapted from this source) on language to avoid and language to use when crafting a job description:

  1. Instead of, must be able to lift 50 pounds. Use: moves equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

  2. Instead of, must be able to stand for entire shift. Use: must be able to remain in a stationary position during shift.

  3. Instead of, walks throughout the building to access files. Use: moves throughout the building to access files.

  4. Instead of, this role requires visually inspecting sites for safety. Us: this role requires inspection of sites to detect safety concerns.

If you do not write job descriptions in your role, feel free to forward this to a trusted colleague or friend. I’ll share some additional suggestions in the coming weeks in honor of NDEAM.

For now, let’s get into this week’s update…

WEEKLY UPDATE

CLIFF NOTES: IN CASE YOU MISSED IT…

STUDY HALL: THINGS YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

  • Download NDEAM virtual backgrounds, posters, and graphics to raise awareness

  • Write a better job description using the tips above

  • Forward this email to a friend

HOMEWORK: DISABILITY SENSITIVITY

What I’m Watching 📺 : The Disability Sensitivity Training video is always a good video to introduce the topic of accessibility.

What I’m Reading This Month 📚: I recently read The Other Black Girl in preparation for the Hulu series. Now, I’m onto Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Trainers: Fostering DEI in the Workplace.

What I’m Drinking ☕: It’s all-things-pumpkin season. But one of things I indulge in is a Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate Drink. It’s on a secret menu so you’ll have to ask for it.

DANCE BREAK: boo thang

This song is all over TikTok and Instagram so of course, it is stuck in my head. I don’t mind because it is upbeat and catchy.

I’d love to hear from you!
