Making gratitude a ritual
How are you doing, friend?
The year is coming to a close in approximately 26 days. In a season of celebrating, I recognize that winter breaks and holidays are not the same for everyone. For this reason, I like to remind myself of my privileges and express gratitude. In fact, I make gratitude my ritual. How do I do that? I approach all communication in the workplace—good or bad—with gratitude.
Here are some scripts you can use to center gratitude:
When you want to express gratitude…
I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for your [specific act of kindness/support]. Your thoughtfulness has not gone unnoticed, and I am truly thankful for the positive impact it has had on [mention the context or situation].
OR
In times like these, gestures like yours serve as a reminder of the strength of our connections and the power of kindness. Your generosity has made a significant difference, and I am grateful to have someone as considerate as you in my life.
When you receive thanks or gratitude (accepting gratitude)…

I want you to know that I am committed to learning from this experience and ensuring that such oversights are minimized in the future.
When someone gives you constructive feedback…
I wanted to express my sincere gratitude for the constructive feedback you provided recently. Your insights were incredibly valuable, and I truly appreciate the time and thought you put into offering such helpful suggestions. Receiving constructive feedback is an essential part of personal and professional growth, and your input has given me valuable perspectives to consider. I wanted to take a moment to provide some constructive feedback that I believe could enhance the overall impact of our efforts. In our recent collaboration, I noticed [specific aspect of the work] and thought it might be beneficial to explore [suggestion or improvement].
When you have to turn down an opportunity…
I want to express my sincere gratitude for extending the offer for the [position title] role at [organization’s name/event]. It has been a pleasure getting to know more about the team and the exciting work you are doing.
After careful consideration and reflection, I have decided to pursue another opportunity that aligns more closely with my current goals and aspirations. This was not an easy decision, as I have great respect for [organization’s name] and am truly impressed with the team.
When they’ve got you twisted they are mistaken…
I believe that open communication is crucial in maintaining positive and respectful relationships, and my intention is to foster understanding.
The comment or action that took place made me feel [describe your emotions or reactions], and I wanted to bring it to your attention so that we can have a conversation about it. I understand that we all have different perspectives and intentions, and I'm hopeful that discussing this openly will help us gain a better understanding of each other's viewpoints. Please let me know when you are available to discuss this matter. I would like to hear your thoughts and insights on the situation as well.
Thank you for taking the time to read this message. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss this further.
