Focus on SELF

Hey friend, it’s been a minute…

So much has been happening in our world with Israel-Palestine, mass violence in the Congo, campus protests, anti-DEI legislation, and the responsibilities and challenges we all face on a daily basis.

On top of all this, a recent NY Times article reminds us all that bias still exists. In case you did not read the article, here’s the short version: a group of economist researchers sent over 80,000 fake resumes to U.S. jobs as an audit study. This was a follow up to a study published in 2004 where researchers sent 5,000 fake resumes to jobs.

What did they find?

Resumes with Black-sounding names were more likely to be discriminated against than White-sounding names. These findings are consistent with the same findings the study found in 2004—20 years ago.

The honest truth is that we are all biased. However, there are a multitude of tools to help people mitigate their biases, particularly in the workplace.

One of the tools I like is Hudson’s SELF Model —basic and practical (the way I like it). Hudson’s suggest doing the following:

  • S - Slow down your thinking, decisions and processes

  • E - Empathize with the feelings and viewpoints of others

  • L - Learn about different groups of people

  • F - Find evidence against stereotypes

If you practice the SELF model regularly, you will eventually be able to mitigate your own thinking about individuals and groups.

P.S. I’ve been quietly working on updating my website to make it more accessible and to share more resources with you. Friend, you will be the first to know when the updated site is available.
