TBN welcome

Welcome The Basic Newsletter

I am so happy you are here! You are receiving the very first weekly email from me. This means your are a part of my community and for that, I am grateful.

A lot has happened in the world around us in the past weeks...

We celebrated Black Women’s Equal Pay Day (September 21). In honor of this awareness day, Minda Harts provided helpful strategies to help us combat wage discrimination. We are still celebrating Latinx Heritage Month. Let’s not forget the contributions of Afro-Latinx folks in our celebrations this month. You can learn more about how to appropriate celebrate heritage months on the blog. Also, protests in Iran have sparked after Mahsa Amini’s death. Here’s what you need to know.

All of this, and much more, reminds me of the importance of centering communities. Each month I try to set an intention for myself. This month my intention is to (re)center. To me, centering, or re-centering in some cases, allows us to focus on the people who need our attention the most. It also means we work hard to make issues less about ourselves and more about amplifying others. One way we can do that is by focusing on BASIC yet key principles. So if you’re interested in going along on this BASIC journey with me, keep scrolling and stay tuned for more info.

Sincerely,

Your favorite CDO

HOMEWORK: LET IT FLOw

What I’m Reading: FLOW by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. What better way to center than learn about cultivating joy and self-fulfillment?

What I’m Watching: MONSTER: THE JEFFREY DAHMER STORY. Yep, you read that right. While it provides great examples of bias in the criminal justice system and true advocacy (through Niecey Nash’s performance), the show has made an harmful impact on victims’ families and various communities.

What I’m Listening To: Jemele Hill is Unbothered, Episode 198 featuring Gina Prince-Bythewood, Director of Woman King.

DANCE BREAK: JESSIE REYEZ - ONLY ONE

This week I am enjoying Jessie Reyez’s album, Yessie. Here’s some motivating lyrics from her song “ONLY ONE.”
