Florida strikes again
Fun fact: my home town is Las Vegas. And, when I tell people I am from Las Vegas, they think I spend my time doing something like this…

While Vegas is a special place to live, most locals are not indulging in the lavish lifestyle. For me, Las Vegas means home and warm weather. And for the next week-ish, I will be spending some time with my family to take care of some things. My family is quite small and we depend on each other for many things. One of those things is caregiving. While it’s only been a few days, I am reminded that we all need somebody in our life. This is even more true as we age. It is hard to get to the next phase of anything by doing it alone. So, here is my reminder to you: show some care to yourself, show care to others, and do not be afraid to ask for the help you need. Being interdependent is sexy. I said what I said.
Now, let’s get into it…

BENTON’S BASICS: RESPONSES TO SUBTLE OFFENSES
Long story short…
Last week, we discussed if you should respond to subtle offenses (i.e., microaggressions). If you missed it, you can find it on the blog.
But I know some of you also want to know how to respond. Don’t worry! I won’t leave you hanging. Here are some prepared statements to use when you choose to respond to a microaggression:
Be curious. Example: I’m curious why you think that. Could you share more about your thinking?
Pretend you don’t understand. Example: I don’t think I understand. Can you explain?
Restate/Paraphase. Example: What I heard you say is [restate or paraphrase their comments]. Is that correct?
Challenge the stereotype. Example: You know, that’s a stereotype. And actually, [insert an alternative perspective or facts that prove it’s a stereotype].
Share your own process. Example: I noticed that you said/did [insert comment or behavior]. I used to say/do that too but I learned [insert corrective language or behavior].

STUDY HALL: THE SANDWICH GENERATION
Are you a part of the Sandwich Generation? Let’s find out what it is and its impact on today’s workforce.
HOMEWORK: MAGAZINES AND MASKING
What I’m Reading 📖: Magazines! One of the perks of going home is thumbing through my mom’s stack of magazines that she collected over the past few months. A much better pastime than doomscrolling.
What I’m Watching 📺: You People on Netflix. Ok, it’s not released yet but I have a feeling it will be good.
What I’m Wearing 😷: All kinds of droplets are in the air so I’m staying masked up.
DANCE BREAK: JOY TO THE WORLD
Not the holiday song but the song by Three Dog Night. It’s an oldie but a goodie.
