Are you in the zone?

Believe it or not, I am still making my way through We Should All Be Millionaires by Rachel Rodgers. One of the gems she shared was the 4 Zones from Gay Hendricks’ book, The Big Leap. The 4 Zones are:

  • Zone of Incompetence - you are engaging in work that you are not good at and/or do not understand

  • Zone of Competence - you are doing work well and efficiently but many people also do this work efficiently and therefore the work does not provide deep satisfaction

  • Zone of Excellence - you are doing work well, efficiently and it pays well. This is likely work that you were professionally trained to do but it is not quite the right fit for you

  • Zone of Genius - you are doing work that you are naturally gifted for. It is easier for you to create and you can produce unique results that are unlike what anyone else is doing

I share this because it is a way of thinking about where we are and where we can go to be truly boundless. There have been times where I I thought I was working in a Zone of Genius but I was really in a Zone of Competence or Zone of Excellence. It was not until I started seeking alignment between my work and satisfaction that I found more opportunities (i.e.,ways to be boundless). If you are not seeking to be in a Zone of Genius, that’s fine. This message is probably not for you. But for those who are ready to enter their Zone of Genius, the goal is to find alignment between your natural gifts, life work, and satisfaction. The more aligned these things are, the more likely you will engage in boundless opportunities.

BENTON’S BASICS: HOW TO RESPOND TO SUBTLE OFFENSES

Long story short…

Contrary to popular belief, see something, say something may not always be the best strategy. When it comes to microaggressions, you may want to think twice about responding, especially if you have one or more marginalized identities. Here are a few questions you should ask yourself before responding to a microaggression:

If I respond,…

  1. …could my physical safety be in danger?

  2. ….will the person become defensive and will this lead to an argument?

  3. …how will this affect my relationship with this person (e.g.,coworker, family member, etc.)

If I don’t respond…

  1. …will I regret not saying something?

  2. …does that convey that I accept the behavior or statement?

There are no right or wrong answers to the above questions. You must do what is best for you and your psychological/physical safety at all times.
