we did it joe(?)

Happy post-election! I hope you exercised your vote to protect our democracy. No pressure. 😬

This past week I was invited to speak on a panel titled, “Possibilities for Anti-racist Artistic Research: A Dialogue between Administration and Faculty” at the national Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (a2ru) conference. If you are not sure what it means to be anti-racist, here is a quick definition. I also shared my thoughts about becoming an anti-racist organization on the blog this week.

And…I started a TikTok series called “Today is a good day…” in hopes of inspiring you to become better and take action. You can check out this short video and this one, too.

Grab your favorite seasonal beverage and let’s get into this week’s news and learning opportunities.

Sincerely,

Your favorite CDO

CLIFF NOTES: IN CASE YOU MISSED IT…

BENTON’S BASICS: WHAT LEADERS SHOULD DO IN RACIAL CRISIS

Long story short…

  1. Leaders should immediately acknowledge what they did wrong, sincerely apologize, and hold themselves accountable.

  2. Leaders, including People of Color, need proactive professional learning and coaching on confronting their biases about other groups.

  3. Consequences for employees at all levels need to be clear before scandalous communication emerges. This needs to be included in policies and in onboarding.

  4. Vetting processes for appointed or potential elected leaders should not be raceless processes.

  5. Resist the urge to quickly move on from a race-related crisis. Allow time for employees and leaders to unpack the situation.
