What about your friends?

Were you one of the 6.3 million viewers that watched the 2023 Golden Globe Awards? Golden Globes did not air last year due to lack of diversity accusations (and other issues) against its governing body, Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). It’s back and is/was it better than before? Well, this year, comedian Jerrod Carmichael was the first Black person to host the awards. He was tasked with addressing the issue and making people laugh as part of his hosting duties. You can watch his candid opening remarks here.

After the awards aired, Chief Diversity Officer of the HFPA, Neil Phillips addressed the ‘justified’ criticism over lack of diversity. While many Artists of Color won wards this year, the structural changes HFPA are making, as noted by Phillips, are equally as important.

On another note, Quinta Brunson is boundless personified. She’s gone from being Vine-famous to author, actor, showrunner, and award winner. Her show, Abbot Elementary, also received a Golden Globe for best musical or comedy series. She is a reminder that we can be more than one thing, a multi-hyphenate.

Cheers to being boundless in 2023 🥂

Sincerely,

Your favorite CDO

Amber Benton

BENTON’S BASICS: MAKING FRIENDS ONLINE

Long story short…

One of the basic ways we can experience different cultures, and mitigate our biases, is by diversifying our friend circle. The average user spends 2.5 hours daily on social media. In 2022, users spent half of their cell phone time on social media. So, it makes sense to foster relationships online. Here’s how to translate those relationships from online to IRL (in real life):

  1. Check out their profile

  2. Suggest a meetup

  3. Transition from DMs to Text

  4. Meet in a safe place

  5. Have an open mind

  6. Take things slow

  7. Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t work out
